Build a framework, not a glossary

What problem does an introductory I Ching class solve?

Many beginners encounter isolated explanations of yin and yang, the Five Phases, trigrams or individual lines, but do not know how these ideas relate or what to study next. The class starts by clarifying levels, relationships and a practical reading order.

The aim is to learn a disciplined way to think about change and read traditional texts. The class does not promise predictive accuracy or replace medical, psychological, legal, financial or other licensed professional advice.

Four foundations

Begin with four connected areas

Yin and yang

Relationships and change

Understand yin and yang as relative positions and changing relationships rather than fixed labels.

Focus: conditions, process, balance and transformation

Five Phases

A relational framework

Study wood, fire, earth, metal and water through their qualities and interactions without applying them mechanically.

Focus: qualities, generation, control and context

Eight trigrams

Images and correspondences

Learn how trigrams are formed and how images and directions support observation without becoming fixed answers.

Focus: structure, imagery, direction and correspondence

Reading the classics

Texts and study methods

Distinguish core text, commentarial layers and later interpretations while building reliable reading notes.

Focus: textual layers, reading order and questions
