Year of the Goat 2027:
Dates, the Fire Goat and What It Means

By Benny Chang · Toronto · Last reviewed October 2026

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027, and opens the Year of the Goat. In the sixty-year cycle it is a Ding Wei (丁未) year: yin Fire over the Goat branch, so it is often called the year of the Fire Goat. People born in a Goat year, including 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015, enter their own zodiac year.

Dates

Two ways the year begins

Most people count the zodiac year from Chinese New Year, the first day of the lunar calendar. In 2027 that is February 6, and the Year of the Goat runs until January 25, 2028, the eve of the next New Year.

The dates and example here follow the Hong Kong Observatory's calendar, in Hong Kong / Beijing time (UTC+8). In BaZi, the year changes at Li Chun, the solar term “Start of Spring,” which in 2027 falls on February 4 in that time zone. Someone born on February 5, 2027 is still in the Horse year by the lunar festival calendar, but already in the Goat year by the BaZi convention of changing the year at Li Chun. Chinese New Year has not yet arrived, but Li Chun has passed.

Li Chun is an exact moment, so its local date and time can differ in Toronto. For a birth near either boundary, check the birth time and time zone against the calendar convention being used; do not treat a date listed in UTC+8 as the Toronto transition time.

The sign

What the Goat traditionally stands for

The Goat (also translated Sheep or Ram; the Chinese 羊 covers all three) is the eighth of the twelve animals and belongs to the earthly branch Wei (未). Wei is the branch of the sixth lunar month, roughly early July to early August, and of the afternoon hours from one to three o'clock. Its element is Earth, specifically the warm, dry earth of late summer, and it is the storehouse of Wood and the resting place of Fire in the traditional scheme.

In folk tradition the Goat is gentle, considerate and artistic, fond of harmony and uneasy with confrontation, with a quiet persistence underneath. These are cultural images attached to the animal, the same way the Tiger is brave or the Rat is quick; they describe a shared story, not a verdict on anyone born in the year.

Each Goat year also carries one of the five elements from its heavenly stem. 2027's stem is Ding (丁), yin Fire: the image of a candle or a lamp rather than the sun. A Fire Goat year is read in the tradition as warmth and refinement resting on steady ground. The last Ding Wei year was 1967; the next will be 2087.

Ben Ming Nian: when your sign comes around

The Goat years above are counted from Chinese New Year of each year; births in late January or early February should be checked against that year's exact date.

For anyone born in a Goat year, 2027 is their ben ming nian (本命年), the return of their own zodiac sign every twelve years. Tradition treats it as a year to be a little more careful and to mark with red: red underwear, a red belt or bracelet, a red string, often given by family at New Year. Like most New Year customs, the point is attention and good wishes rather than a prediction.

A BaZi reading does not treat the zodiac year as fate. It looks at the whole birth chart, the year, month, day and hour, and at how the incoming year interacts with that structure. Two people born in the same Goat year can have very different charts and very different years. If you want to understand what 2027 looks like for you personally, that is a consultation question, not something a zodiac column can answer. The difference is explained in Chinese zodiac vs BaZi.

Customs

How the Year of the Goat is welcomed

Chinese New Year is a family festival first. The customs below are shared across Chinese communities with regional variations, and most of them translate easily into a workplace or community celebration in Toronto.

  • New Year's Eve dinnerThe reunion meal on February 5, 2027. Fish for abundance, dumplings or rice cakes depending on the region, and a whole table rather than a single dish.
  • Red envelopesMoney in red packets given to children and, in many families, to unmarried younger relatives, with even amounts and new bills.
  • Couplets and the character fuPaired verses on red paper beside the door and the character 福 (fortune), sometimes hung upside down as a pun on “fortune arrives.”
  • Greetings“Xin nian kuai le” (happy new year) and “gong xi fa cai” (wishing you prosperity); in a Goat year, wishes often play on 羊 and the word for “auspicious.”
  • The fifteenth dayThe Lantern Festival on February 20, 2027 closes the season with lanterns, riddles and sweet rice balls.

For organizations

Bringing the Year of the Goat into an event

A Chinese New Year celebration works best when guests understand what they are celebrating. A short talk on the Fire Goat and the customs of the season, or an interactive segment where guests learn their own sign, gives a reception or year-end event a cultural centre. Benny Chang gives these talks in Toronto and the GTA in English or Mandarin; see Chinese New Year and zodiac talks for events.

This article explains the zodiac as culture. It does not forecast anyone's year and is not medical, financial, legal or psychological advice.
